Heliopsis are reliable for their very long season of bloom. H. 'Asahi'—which means morning sun in Japanese—grows into a beautiful, mid-sized, bushy clump of dark green leaves. Between mid-summer and mid-autumn, stems 70-75cm high, carry branching heads of large golden-yellow, fully double—almost pompon-like—daisy flowers. These prolific, long-lasting flowers resemble marigolds; but provide the benefits of a perennial. The height of Heliopsis helianthoides 'Asahi' is shorter than many other forms of the false sunflower, making this plant good for the front or mid-way part of a border!
Removing faded flowers regularly will greatly extend the blooming season. Plants should not require staking. Apart from its outstanding garden qualities, this double false sunflower also makes a wonderful cut flower, lasting for up to two weeks in a vase. H. 'Asahi' looks good with perennials that offer effective textural and contrasting colours, such as Agastache, Asters, Heuchera, Phlox paniculata (or other tall phloxes), Physostegia, Veronicastrum, hardy Geraniums and Hemerocallis. This Heliopsis is both easy-to-grow, and hugely rewarding.
