Peony 'Canary Brilliants' is one the very best of the Itoh hybrid peonies. It first appeared around the turn of this century, and has been consistently popular since. It has exceedingly well-formed flowers, and is very floriferous, two qualities one doesn’t always see in plants. The blooms, which have an exquisitely strong fragrance, are pale lemon/cream, turning bright yellow with a splash of coral. Paeonia 'Canary Brilliants' is taller than most Itoh Peonies — 100-120cm — and it is also wide, at around 130-150cm , which means that it will become a very substantial plant in the garden. Incidentally, the flowers are also great for cutting and indoor decoration, as its vase-life is better than most!
Unusual, rare and highly collectable, Intersectional or Itoh hybrid peonies are named after Toichi Itoh, the Japanese originator of these wonderful plants. They are the result of hybridizing the two main peony groups: the herbaceous peonies (which die down to ground level each year) and the tree or woody peonies (which keep a woody branch system all year round).
