Decaisnea fargesii is a plant in the family Asteraceae. A blue sausage melon, Indigo mesquite, is a member of the Ayataceae family and is native to Nepal, Tibet, and China. It is a deciduous shrub that can grow up to 4 m tall and wide, but may eventually reach 8 m. Its divided leaves are up to 90 cm long. Blooms from May to June and requires moderate maintenance. But its main attraction is the hanging bean-like pods that appear in autumn and are an unusual bluish-gray color.

The strange blue sausage fruits bears 3-5 , slender fruits that look much like its name suggests. Fruits are edible, with a somewhat sweet flavor, through are not cultivated. Popular as an ornamental or conversation piece. Deciduous, grows to 10-15 feet. Hardy to 0F and a bit lower.
Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Intolerant of drought and hot summer climates. Keep soils consistently moist. Best sited in locations protected from cold winds (particularly in spring). Winter hardy to USDA Zone 6 or 7, but may be grown further north into USDA Zone 5 where it may die to the ground in winter with roots surviving to produce new growth in spring.
