Colocasia 'Aloha' is now finally available after years of cultivation programming, and it is still rarely offered. It is part of the Hawaiian Series, bred by Dr John Cho from Hawaii. In his breeding work, he was able to combine the clumping form of the Colocasia esculenta species, with the leaf patterning of the Colocasia 'Illustris' group. The result is an extremely vigorous cultivar with outstanding foliage quality.
Originally from tropical eastern Asia, the colocasia is a tuberous-rooted, evergreen perennial growing, in some cases, to around 150cm / 60" in height. Its main attraction is its long-stalked, large, heart- or arrow-shaped leaves. In the case of Colocasia esculenta Royal Hawaiian® 'Aloha', these leaves are strikingly green-black, and very glossy. They are contrasted nicely on both the front and back by prominent green-white veins. These leaves can reach 60cm / 24" in length, and some 30cm / 12" across. With huge leaves like this, you can see why colocasia has the common name Elephant Ears!
Our colocasia bulbs are grown and cultivated in Costa Rica.
