With dazzling red and white stripes, the flowers of Hippeastrum 'Santiago' make a spectacular centrepiece, particularly when potted three bulbs to a container (as we always recommend for amaryllis). In frost-prone climates such as ours these tender bulbs are usually grown as houseplants, particularly valued for their flowering during the darkest days of winter and spring. With up to 12 enormous blooms produced per bulb, the generous Amaryllis 'Santiago' seems determined to make up for the lack of flowers outside!
Place your pot of Hippeastrum 'Santiago' in bright, filtered light. If we’re going to get nerdy about it, a temperature of 21°C is ideal for getting the bulb going, then once it is in flower moving it somewhere slightly cooler, say 15-18°C, will extend the bloom period nicely. In simple terms, perhaps a windowsill near a radiator at first, then onto the middle of a sunny table later on.
